Charles Fysh's Store

107 Burwood Road, Hawthorn, 3122

Charles Fysh left England and arrived in Melbourne on the Neleus in December 1855. At first he ran a store on the south-west corner of Burwood Road and Power Street Hawthorn. This building no longer exists, having been demolished to allow room for the tram going from Power Street into Burwood Road. Then in 1869 he built a new store on the north-west corner, 107 Burwood Road. Below you can see the store as it was in the early days and how it is in 2001. Beneath the pictures of the store is a photo of the commemorative plaque that is attached to the Burwood Road wall. At the bottom of the page is a copy of an advertisement for his earlier store in the South Bourke Standard.
